Turning Telematics Data into Action

by Jan 8, 2018Fleet Management, Telematics

Telematics is one of the most insightful and valuable tools available for vehicle fleets. With the variety of inexpensive and hassle-free options, many fleets are utilizing telematics capabilities to understand and improve their fleet practices.

For some fleets, however, accessing data through telematics has not become a standard practice. Whether you are missing out on this data because you have not installed telematics in your fleet or have not yet accessed the information available, use this blog to learn how you can turn telematics data into action to better your fleet.

1. Determine the most useful data for your fleet

Most telematics systems offer a wide variety of data and reports for your use. As you begin accessing the data offered by your system, it’s important to determine which information is most useful for your fleet. Do you want to learn more about your fleet drivers’ behavior? Or perhaps you want to monitor your vehicle health through diagnostics tracking? Only you know how your fleet operates, so take the time to determine what you need to know about your vehicles and drivers.

2. Actively track and report data

Once you know what you want to track, work with your fleet to start actively monitoring this data. Train your drivers and dispatchers on operating your telematics devices and learn how to create the reports you need. Use your telematics to comply with ELD Mandate requirements and track Hours of Service to make sure your drivers are doing what they need to. As you get more accustomed to using telematics, you’ll get a better idea of what you need to track and how to create the most useful reports.

3. Use data to improve practices

Once you’ve begun collecting fleet data, you can use it to improve the way you run your fleet and how it operates. Telematics data is useless without analyzation, so use your reports to monitor trends and changes in your fleet. Once you have tangible information, you can better understand your fleet’s strengths and weaknesses and use them to create a more efficient operation.

Have you used your telematics to improve the way your fleet runs?
