Creating DVIRs with Your Geotab Go8

Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) are required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) at the beginning and end of every commercial motor vehicle driver’s workday. These reports are designed to ensure that each vehicle is performing well enough to avoid accidents caused by mechanical failures. In fact, through these reports and other commercial vehicle roadside inspection programs, the FMCSA estimates that 14,000 crashes and 9,000 injuries have been avoided.

These twice-daily reports must be submitted to motor carriers and retained for three months, so it’s important to have an efficient way to record and keep them. With Geotab’s Go devices, fleets can comply with federal regulations, monitor vehicle statuses, and improve driver safety.

1. Comply with federal regulations

For each DVIR, drivers are required to check the following:

  • Tires, rims, and wheels
  • Steering
  • Rearview and side mirrors
  • Braking and air systems
  • Power units and trailers
  • Windshield wipers
  • Emergency and safety equipment
  • Reflectors and lights
  • Fifth wheels and coupling equipment

These mechanisms must be checked before drivers start the vehicle to begin their day and after they have turned it off at the end of the day. With the Geotab Go8, these reports are automated and easy to complete. Drivers simply open the DVIR section on the Geotab Drive app and use the pre-set list to add details about each item. These electronic DVIRs are then submitted directly to the motor carrier and recorded, as required by the FMCSA.

2. Monitor vehicles statuses

Whether your fleet has 100 vehicles or 1,000, keeping track of every DVIR can be difficult. With the Geotab Go8, reports can be viewed online at any time. If a driver reports an issue, managers receive an alert within 30 minutes of the report’s filing. With the automated reports offered through Geotab Drive, you can be sure that every vehicle has been thoroughly inspected.

3. Improve driver safety

As mentioned above, DVIRs were instituted to improve safety for fleet drivers. With the Geotab Go8, you can make sure that every vehicle is safe for use. As drivers report and record any defects, you can make sure that each repair is completed before the vehicle is used again. With the Go8, you can do your best to ensure your drivers’ safety whenever they are on the road in your vehicles.
